Cabaret Mado

Montreal’s number one drag bar, but not for your traditional Barbara, Liza and Whitney. Expect the unexpected with owner and chief drag queen Mado Lamotte. Mostly gay, but lesbians welcome. More ladies stop by earlier in the evening for a drink in the lounge which is surprisingly understated considering the later evening’s entertainment.

This place is more “kétaine”, slang for “kitsch”, than anything else. Lots of straight people too, especially for stagettes.

Cirque de Boudoir

“Cirque De Boudoir combines elements of circus performance, burlesque and fetish, with unique themed electro dance dress-up parties. Eclectic and electric, Cirque De Boudoir's mission is to encourage creativity and sexual rebellion through glamorous events that attract the pretty and perverse.”  These are one-off events held every few months in different venues across the city.  Check the website for more details.

Cruise Control (1st Thursday of the month at Vinyl)

For gals and queers who want to get their cruise on.  Dancing, flirting (and if you're lucky, maybe more!) with all of the cute alternative girls.  Hosted by the owner of the lesbian-owned Revolution bike shop (and lesbian haircut salon!)

F*ckstar (Thursday nights at Sky)

Bodypainting, over-the-top performances, drag queens, shooter grrls, cheap booze, debauchery galore! Throw in some electro-rock, post-pop, new wave and danceable indie and you’ve got F*ckstar. This evening takes place in a boy bar, and there are more bent boys than girls on hand, but yes, there is still lots of fun to be had.

Faggity-Ass Fridays (Fridays at the Main Hall)

The Mile End is a totally lesbian neighbourhood, but until Faggity-Ass Fridays arrived, there was nowhere for the local queer community to party.  Now every Friday night you'll find all the cool kids (and some of their older counterparts) shakin' their groove thing at the Main Hall.  Performance is also a big part of this party, so count on an original show or two every week.

Le Cocktail (Fridays and Saturdays)

Le Cocktail has generally attracted a gay boy crowd, but with so little happening for lesbians in the Montreal club scene, it seems they've taken our plight to heart and are now offering two weekly events for women. On Fridays it's an early happy hour called "Pulp" that continues right through to the wee hours and on Saturday night it's lesbian dancing all night long.

Le Drugstore

This is a huge, multi-level, mainly lesbian complex with bars, boutiques, a restaurant and a great view of the gay village's main strip. To boot, it’s the city’s only official full-time dyke bar. The Friday after-work happy hour is especially popular with the ladies, but the clientele can be hit or miss at other moments of the week. I mostly appreciate this space in the summertime, enjoying a cool drink under a parasol on the rooftop.

Aaargh, this place is no fun and the girls... not so interesting unless it's summer.

There’s pool tables and video games on the lower deck!

Meow Mix (monthly at Sala Rossa)

Monthly Saturday night dance/performance parties for bent girls and their buddies. As someone who actually lives in Montreal, I can tell you that these are the best dyke parties in town, where all the cool girls converge. If you’re lucky enough, my favorite local indie dyke band, Lesbians on Ecstasy, could even be on the bill. Check the website for details of the next event.

Piknic Electronik (Sundays during the summer months at Ile-St. Helene)

This summer Sunday t-dance isn’t necessarily gay or lesbian, but it certainly draws a lot of homos into the mix. Each week a couple thousand people head out to Ile-St. Helene on summer Sunday afternoons to dance outdoors in the sunshine (or the rain) to the hottest in electronica music. The party starts early, about 1p.m., and usually finishes by about 9ish so the working stiffs can still get home in time for a good sleep before Monday morning rolls ‘round.
